“UFC on FX 3” preliminary card results and updates

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is heading back to Florida for “UFC on FX 3” tonight, and HeavyMMA.com has all the preliminary card action from the event with live round-by-round updates.

Undercard action begins at 5 p.m. ET with two bouts streaming live on Facebook, followed by another six preliminary bouts airing live on FUEL TV.

Sean Pierson vs. Jake Hecht
Round 1: Hecht immediately shoots in for a takedown and gets it. He maneuvers to Pierson’s back. Wait, does not quite have it. Pierson turns him and ends up on top. Closed guard for Hecht. Pierson stands and drops a big shot down to move to side control. Now north-south. Back to side control. Pierson attempts to mount, but Hecht evades. Guillotine from Pierson, but Hecht stands up and slams him down. Pierson stands back up, but their in the clinch. Body shots from Pierson, who works the fight back down. Hecht tries to work back up and does, but Pierson is smothering him against the cage. Hecht separates with a nice knee with 30 seconds to go. Body kick from Hecht. Pierson with a nice right hand at the end of the round. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Pierson.

Round 2: Brief exchange early, but neither appear to land anything flush. Head kick misses for Hecht. Pierson drives him against the cage in the clinch and works body punches. Hecht turns him up against the cage. They separate. Pierson with a nice uppercut. Head kick blocked by Pierson. Hecht with a combination, but it only leads to a clinch. Pierson turns Hecht into the cage and separates with a looping right. Hecht shoots for a long takedown and nearly gets caught in a guillotine. Back to the clinch, and Pierson goes back to the body shots. They separate again. Hecht with a body kick, but Pierson comes straight back with a left. Takedown attempt from Hecht, and Pierson turns him into the cage. Knees traded in the clinch. Pierson steps away with 60 seconds remaining in the round. Head kick glances off Pierson, and a few more kicks have him going for a takedown. Misses on the trip. Pierson with a right hook, and the round comes to a close shortly after. Round 3: Kick from Hecht, followed by a takedown attempt. He earns this one. Not much action. The referee stands this fight back up with four minutes to go. Hecht comes forward with a combination, and Pierson fails to counter. Hecht misses on a punch and head kick, but dives in for the takedown. He tries to pull Pierson off the cage. He is not having much luck. They separate, and Hecht with a right. Head kick misses for him. He tries another. Uneventful round so far. Niether fighter willing to commit. Hecht storms forward with a takedown attempt, but simply drives his opponent into the cage. Punches from Pierson. One minute remains. They separate from the clinch, and Hecht looks for a superman punch, then a head kick. He misses. Pierson lands. Body kick for Hecht. 10 seconds. Nothing significant at the round’s end. Bernardo Magalhaes vs. Henry Martinez
Round 1: Bit of confusion off te bat with the referee telling officials to ring the bell. Here we go. Fighters trading on the feet here, but neither landing flush. Martinez comes in and throws, but Magalhaes with a nice left counter. Martinez right back with a few punches of his own. Martinez with another nice shot. Kick misses from Magalhaes. Martinez pawing the jab. Someone in the crowd screams in support for Martinez and the crowd comes alive. Magalhaes pulls guard and immediately is looking leg lock. He reverses and gets on top, but Martinez escapes in the scramble. Back to the feet. Nice inside leg kick from Magalhaes. Left hook counter lands for Martinez. Takedown attempt from Magalhaes, who instead looks to pull guard. Martinez moves away. Both standing again. Magalhaes with a combo, but he misses and gets tagged on the counter. Martinez dodging combinations, but not landing counters. Round closes. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Martinez.

Round 2: They get right to it in round two with a brief exchange, each landing a shot or two. Martinez pawing the jab and takes a body kick. Kick from Martinez, but Magalhaes ducks away. Nice right lands for Magalhaes, and another shortly after.Magalhaes shoots in, but stops mid-shot. Another right lands against Martinez. Pace has slowed quite drastically. Neither fighter is able to get inside and land. It seems as if every shot is getting blocked, as each fighter attempts to land combos. One minute to go, and Magalhaes attempts to get the fight down, but pulls back again. 10 seconds. Fighters pick it up a bit, but neither land. Uneventful round. Round 3: Fighters tentative again. Nice knee from Magalhaes, followed by an outside leg kick. Martinez looks to come forward, but walks into a combination. Another kick lands for Magalhaes, but he misses with a follow-up. Inside leg kick for Magalhaes, but he eats a body shot from Martinez. Spinning back kick comes up short for Magalhaes. Nice counter from Martinez. He lands a short leg kick. Nice right hand from Martinez. And another. Magalhaes sticks and moves nicely. He lands a leg kick. Martinez with a combination, but every shot is blocked. Magalhaes with a takedown attempt, but Martinez spins out nicely. Looked like Magalhaes was going to get that. Martinez lands a combo. 60 seconds. Big flying knee from Magalhaes gets a rise from the crowd. Magalhaes with another takedown attempt, but Martinez escapes with a nice sprawl. 10 seconds to go. Magalhaes pushes forward with strikes, while Martinez looks to counter. Neither find success. The round comes to an end. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Magalhaes.

Ciao Magalhaes vs. Buddy Roberts
Round 1: Overhand right from Roberts as he rushes forward. Magalhaes feels it and immediately tries to take the fight down. Knee lands for Roberts, but he misses with a combination shortly after. Another takedown attempt from Magalhaes, but this one sends Roberts into the cage wall. Magalhaes lifts him up in an effort to slam him, but fails. Second attempt, however, works, but only momentarily. Roberts up, but Magalhaes trying to get him down again. He is relentless. He gets the takedown, but Roberts is right back up again. They separate. Magalhaes with a kick to the leg, but misses on a kick to the head. Then a left. Magalhaes fakes a takedown attempt, and Roberts tries to land a kick of his own. He lands a right and a head kick. Magalhaes swings back wildly, finishing with a high kick. Round ends. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Roberts.

Round 2: Magalhaes gets this round started with a front kick, and Roberts immediately fires back, leading to a crazy exchange. These guys want a finish, clearly. Magalhaes is on the offensive after a Roberts’ miss, throwing a kick to the head. Flying knee misses for Roberts. A lot of missing in this fight, but these guys are throwing heavy. Fight works to the fence, as Magalhaes grabs hold of a leg. Roberts is down, but back up right away. Magalhaes tries to lift Roberts up for a slam, but fails again. “How about a double leg,” Magalhaes must be thinking, as he repositions. No, back to single. Roberts escapes thanks to his takedown defense. Spinning back kick from Magalhaes is thrown, but it looks errant. Kick from Roberts. Another, more powerful leg kick lands for him. Leg kick from Magalhaes. Body kick fired back from Roberts shortly after, but can’t find a home of the right. Magalhaes looks to answer, but fails as the round comes to a close. Round 3: Roberts with a combination, featuring an overhand right, but it is blocked. Magalhaes with a body kick after a brief stalemate. They exchange, and Magalhaes finishes with a decent shot. The fighters trade jabs, and Magalhaes lands a pair of kicks. Roberts looks to strike with a combination. He falls back, and Magalhaes looking to catch him with a kick. Punches on the counter from Roberts. Magalhaes looks takedown, lifting Roberts up and completing it. Longest time spent on the ground, but Roberts still manages to get up quickly. Magalhaes fires back with another takedown. Relentless. He has it and looks to work, but a guard pass only allows Roberts to stand back up. Roberts with a punch and a kick. Magalhaes answers a jab with a kick, and Roberts answers with a kick and more punches. Roberts steps back, but comes right back, missing with a  hook. Takedown attempt in the waning moments for Magalhaes, but this fight is over. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Roberts.

Justin Salas vs. Tim Means
Round 1: Salas immediately throws, and misses, an overhand right. Means on the counter, landing nicely. The shot leads to more punches and knees. Salas is in trouble, trying to escape the attack, but falls. He eats a knee getting back up and tries again to break away from his opponent. Punch scores for Means. This fight is over, but not before several more strikes land. Late stoppage, but incredible onslaught put on by Means, while Salas stayed tough until the finish.

Official Decision: Means def. Salas via technical knockout at 1:06 of Round 1

Jared Papazian vs. Dustin Pague
Round 1: Leg kicks from Pague to get this bout started, attempting to keep Papazian’s distance. Papazian throws a combination, but it’s met with leg kicks from Pague again. Papazian with another bunch of punches, but Pague clinches. He trips Papazian down and is in full mount. Elbows from Pague after a brief pause. Papazian is trying to escape, giving up his back in the process. Not sure if Pague has good enough position here, but he maintains the back. Up against the cage, and Papazian is caught in a body triangle. This is trouble so early in the round. Pague locks on a choke and cranks hard. Papazian taps. Strong performance from Pague, who is the first Submission of the Night candidate tonight in Florida.

Leonard Garcia vs. Matt Grice
Round 1: Garcia circles away from a Grice combination, then looks to land a jab. Leg kicks miss for both fighters, but Garcia capitalizes with a pair of jabs and an overhand right. Leg kick fired from Grice. Garcia back to the jab. Huge miss. Grice moves in for the takedown and effortlessly earns it. Garcia attempt to push away, as Grice stands and throws down. Grice moves to half guard and is working in strikes. Side control now, then to north-south. He appears to be looking for a choke from this position. Good work from Garcia, who is free. But Grice gets back on top in half guard, looking to strike. Garcia gains full guard, and is looking for an arm bar. It’s not there. Elbows from Grice. Strong opening round from Grice. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Grice.

Round 2: Garcia’s head kick is blocked, and Grice counters with punches that lead to a takedown attempt. Garcia battling to keep his footing and succeeds. They each throw head kicks, but neither score. Lull in the action here. Grice dodges a punch and shoots in for a takedown after an exchange. He is looking for ground and pound, but then decides to move to half guard after a few strikes. He postures up and lands. A few elbows here. Garcia trying to sit up and escape, but he will have to settle for guard. Garcia just can’t get up. He is getting smothered here. More strikes from Grice, who is staying active. Nice rights and elbows. Good round. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Grice.

Round 3: Garcia missing right out of the gate. He throws a few jabs to keep distance, but Grice lands a right and a kick. Garcia with a wild head kick and a combination, but can’t land flush. Flurry from Garcia, but misses. And another. He is missing a lot here, but has been the entire fight. Grice with a takedown attempt, but Garcia avoids. Another jab from Leonard. Another takedown attempt for Grice, but, again, he can’t get it. Garcia missing with big, wild combinations. Big shot misses, and Grice wastes no time taking him down to the canvas. Garcia kicks him off, then misses with a kick of his own. He then misses with another combination. He gets taken down again due to the wild strikes. Grice gets side control, but is forced into half guard. Another solid round for Grice. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Grice.

Seth Baczynski vs. Lance Benoist
Round 1: Benoist with a head kick for the first action. They clinch, and Benoist locks on a guillotine attempt, but immediately lets it go. Front kicks from Benoist. Baczynski forward with an errant combination, though he does land his next left. Another clinch. Benoist with the trip, and Baczynski is on his back. Punches from Baczynski do little. Benoist punching, while Baczynski tries to slide to the cage. Baczynski tries to stand but eats a knee and some punches. Break in action. The referee calls the knee illegal. No penalty. We’re back, and the fighters are on the feet. They trade kicks. The distance closes, and Benoist looks for a standing arm triangle. He lets it go shortly after. Benoist tries to bring the fight to the ground again, but Baczynski ends up in top position. Big punches from Baczynski, who then moves to a submission attempt. He lets it go. More punches. Heavy.com scores the round for Benoist.

Round 2: Benoist lands the first major strike, scoring a head kick and landing more just after. Baczynski playing into his hands, as Benoist counters very successfully. Break in action after an illegal knee, but, just like the first illegal knee, no point deduction is assessed. Action restarts. Benoist gets the fight down and is on top. Baczynski looking for a triangle choke here. Benoist with a couple of shots. He stands to throw down punches, but Baczynski fires upkicks, forcing Benoist back. But Benoist comes back and is in guard once again. Baczynski looking for another triangle choke, but instead is able to get back up. Flying knee from Baczynski, followed by a guillotine attempt. He lands in guard. Benoist looking for a submission, while Baczynski throws punches as the round comes to a close. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 Baczynski.

Round 3: Nice strikes land for Benoist at the start, as he tries to back up Baczynski. No luck. The fighters clinch up against the cage, Baczynski in the better position. Benoist with a trip, but Baczynski gets back to the feet right away. Benoist comes back and gets him against the cage, but Baczynski is holding his own. Benoist is looking for a takedown, and Baczynski counters with a guillotine.  Benoist on top now looking to land hammerfists. Baczynski hopes to land elbows from the bottom. Not much action, and the referee stands the fighters back up. Benoist with a flying knee, followed by another standing arm triangle choke. Baczynski with the late takedown and final strikes. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Benoist.

Mike Pierce vs. Carlos Eduardo Rocha
Round 1: Brief pause at the start. Rocha says Pierce has too much vaseline on his face. Okay, here we go. Pierce immediately tries to get this fight to the ground, but Rocha lands a knee. Pierce drives him into the cage. Knees from both guys. Rocha with some soft jabs and a head kick. Pierce counters. He rushes in with punches and picks Rocha up, but Rocha maintains his footing. Up against the cage, and Pierce lands knees. He shoots in for another takedown attempt, but just gets a knee. Rocha trying to escape, but Pierce is smothering him against the cage. Pierce finally gets the takedown, but lets Rocha up. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Pierce.

Round 2:

Pierce lands a punch to start this frame and comes barreling in for a takedown. He drives Rocha against the cage, but he just can’t get the takedown. They throw back and forth in an exchange. Pierce looks for the takedown again. He gets this one. Rocha immediately looking for a leg, but he can’t get it. Pierce stands up overhead and throws down on his opponent. He is landing nicely. Elbow from Pierce. Rocha looking for another submission. Pierce in guard and defending nicely. He is working shots to the body and to the head. Rocha gets to his knees and is able to stand. Up against the cage he scores an elbow. Still, another good round for Pierce. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Pierce.

Round 3: Pierce with a punch and a kick. They are against the fence, but Rocha somehow manages to escape and tries to land. Pierce is being patient. Interesting kick from Rocha. Pierce comes forward. He forces his opponent into the fence once again. This is not good news for Rocha. They are separated by the referee, and Rocha lands a kick, but it does little. Pierce goes for a leg and gets another takedown. He is throwing strikes from the top. Nice elbows to the leg. Big shots now, but Rocha is avoiding much damage. More shots from Pierce as the round comes to a close. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Pierce.
