Melendez vs. Masvidal official for December
“Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal” is now official for December 17 in San Diego, California.
The event will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between champion Gilbert Melendez and top contender Jorge Masvidal.
Melendez, whose future seemed to be geared toward a move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, is currently on a five-fight winning streak, causing some to declare him the best lightweight in the sport. He last fought in the co-main event of “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley,” when he defeated Tatsuya Kawajiri via technical knockout prior to his teammate Diaz knocking out Paul Daley.
Meanwhile, Masvidal, who is riding a two-fight winning streak, last competed at “Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum,” picking up a unanimous decision win over K.J. Noons. His last loss came in September of last year to the aforementioned Daley.
The December 17 event will take place at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center. Two other fights have been confirmed by the promotion, as women’s featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will battle HirokoYamanaka and Gegard Mousasi meets Ovince St. Preux.
