Welterweights set for June 22 fight in Atlantic City

Rich Attonito is injured and has been forced out of his fight against Rick Story next month. Stepping in for him will be Papy Abedi.

UFC officials on Wednesday announced the change for the card, which takes place June 22 at the Revel resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The card, UFC on FX: Maynard vs. Guida, will be the UFC’s fourth live event on the FX cable network. Headlining the show is a lightweight contenders bout between two-time title challenger Gray Maynard and Clay Guida.

Abedi (8-2, 0-2 UFC) is in search of his first UFC victory. He started his MMA career 8-0 with eight stoppages. But in the UFC, he’s run into two first-round submission losses to Thiago Alves at UFC 138 in November and James Head just last month at UFC on Fuel TV: Gustafsson vs. Silva in his home country of Sweden.

Story (13-5, 6-3 UFC) has dropped two straight fights after a six-fight winning streak that had him in consideration for a shot at the welterweight title. Last June, he was upset by Charlie Brenneman on short notice after Nate Marquardt was unable to fight him at UFC on Versus 4 – and cut by UFC president Dana White the next day. And at UFC 139 in November, he dropped a unanimous decision to Martin Kampmann. Over his six-fight winning streak, he beat former title challenger Alves as well as current contender Johny Hendricks.

Attonito (10-5, 3-2 UFC) also was looking to get back in the win column; he’s dropped two of his last three, including a second-round TKO loss to Jake Hecht at UFC 140 in December.

UFC on FX 4 also features the trilogy fight between lightweights Spencher Fisher and Sam Stout, a welterweight fight between Brian Ebersole and TJ Waldburger and a featherweight fight between Ross Pearson and Cub Swanson.
