UFC Returns to Indianapolis in September for FX Show

Promotion last visited Indiana for UFC 119 in September 2010

To borrow from The Jackson Five, the UFC is goin’ back to Indiana.

The promotion on Wednesday announced a second visit to Indianapolis for late summer. UFC on FX 5 will take place at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown in the state capital on Sept. 7. The Friday night show gets a main card broadcast on the FX cable network.

No fights were announced for the card, but bout bookings should start trickling out over the next couple of months.

The UFC last visited Indianapolis in September 2010 for the UFC 119 pay-per-view. That event took place at the same venue, which was then called Conseco Fieldhouse, and drew nearly 16,000 fans. UFC 119 featured a main event between former heavyweight champion Frank Mir and Croatian legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, which Mir won with a late third-round knockout from a knee to the head.

The card also featured three fighters from Indiana, all of whom won their fights. The now-retired Chris Lytle beat former welterweight champ Matt Serra by unanimous decision, Indianapolis resident Matt Mitrione beat Joey Beltran in a Fight of the Night performance and Indianapolis resident Sean McCorkle made his UFC debut with a submission win over current heavyweight contender Mark Hunt.

With Lytle retired and pursuing a career in politics and McCorkle out of the UFC, Mitrione remains the only current Indianapolis-based fighter on the UFC roster. He may be a longshot, at best, to wind up on the card since he fights just five weeks earlier at UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles.

But the UFC has a handful of other fighters on the roster from Indiana, including Stephan Bonnar, Miguel Torres, Jon Fitch, Dave Herman, Eddie Wineland, Darren Elkins and Keith Wisniewski.
