Varner replaces Etim, meets Lauzon in August

Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner has agreed to step in against Joe Lauzon at “UFC on FOX 4” this August.

UFC officials announced the news on Wednesday.

Varner received the call after an injury forced Terry Etim off the card earlier this week.

Lauzon last competed at UFC 144 against another former WEC lightweight champion. He was brutally knocked out by an Anthony Pettis head kick. The loss snapped a two-fight losing skid that included an improbable victory over Melvin Guillard at UFC 136.

Meanwhile, Varner enters the contest fresh off of a win at UFC 146. He upset Edson Barboza to extend his winning streak to three, though it was his first win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship since 2007.

“UFC on FOX 4” is set for August 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. A light heavyweight contest between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera will serve as the headliner.
