Urijah Faber to headline UFC 149 after Aldo injury

The injury bug continues to bite the UFC as featherweight champion Jose Aldo is the latest fighter forced to the sidelines due to an undisclosed injury suffered during his training. He was slated to face Erik Koch in the main event of UFC 149 in Calgary, Canada. There has been no official word if the UFC will find a replacement to face Koch or if he will remain on the July card.

Stepping in to fill the headliner slot at UFC 149 will be former WEC champion Urijah Faber, as he faces rising Brazilian star Renan Barao. They were originally set to collide at UFC 148 to decide the division’s interim champion which the UFC created following an injury to current champion Dominick Cruz. Faber vs. Barao will be the main event when the UFC hits Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada on July 21.

The injury to Aldo is the latest hit taken by UFC 149 as former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was moved to the “UFC on Fox 4” card and former TUF winner Michael Bisping was forced to withdraw from his bout with Tim Boestch because of injury as well. “The Barbarian” will now face former Bellator champion Hector Lombard as he makes his UFC debut in Calgary.
