Trigg, Watson victorious; Ninja Rua retires
This year has not been so great for the Rua brothers.
Just over two months following Mauricio Rua‘s loss to Jon Jones in the main event championship bout of UFC 128, his brother Murilo Rua failed to capture gold at BAMMA 6 last night.
Rua struggled to defend against knockout artist and BAMMA middleweight champion Tom Watson at Wembley Arena in London, England. After two tough rounds, Rua was finished by the Brit in the third round with a head kick and a few more strikes. Following the bout, the PRIDE veteran announced his retirement from the sport.
Also on the card, UFC veteran Frank Trigg earned his second consecutive victory since coming out of retirement following his UFC 109 loss to Matt Serra. The man nicknamed “Twinkle Toes” defeated John Phillips via first round technical knockout after Trigg cut his opponent with vicious elbows.
Trigg now stands at 21-8 as a professional and has won six of his last eight fights. However, he has not won a fight in the United States since February of 2009.
While one UFC veteran was successful last night, another was not, as Ivan Salaverry was defeated via unanimous decision in his main card bout against Matt Ewin. The fight marked the veteran’s return to the sport after retiring back in May of 2008 following his submission loss to Rousimar Palhares at UFC 84.
