Alistair Overeem Says He’s Fighting Brett Rogers in May

Alistair Overeem hasn’t defended his Strikeforce heavyweight belt in years. Actually, Overeem hasn’t even had a fight under the Strikeforce banner in years. But according to Overeem, that’s about to change.

Overeem announced on Twitter today that he’ll meet Brett Rogers in a non-title fight on the unannounced Strikeforce card set for May 15 in St. Louis. The card hasn’t been officially scheduled by Strikeforce at this point, but sources confirmed to Heavy.com on Monday evening that it’s very likely the promotion will make its second trip to St. Louis in less than a year.

Overeem was scheduled to face Rogers last summer, but suffered a hand injury during a fight at an Amsterdam nightclub and was forced to pull out of the fight. Overeem was then scheduled to face Fabricio Werdum, but withdrew from the bout due to complications from the hand injury. Of course, those complications weren’t bad enough to prevent him from entering the 2009 K-1 Grand Prix two weeks later.

We aren’t gambling men here at Heavy, but if we had to put a line on the Overeem/Rogers fight not happening, it would probably be somewhere in the vicinity of -300.
