Strikeforce held independent drug testing for six participants from the May 15 “Heavy Artillery” card, and each fighter’s result came back clean, including often-criticized Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. The tests were conducted to determine whether any fighter had used either drugs of abuse or performance enhancing drugs.
Heavy.com confirmed the test results with Strikeforce officials on Friday.
Along with Overeem, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Joey Villasenor, who faced off on the evening’s main card in a bout that saw “Jacare” dominate his fellow rising contender, underwent the testing, along with Antwain Britt, Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante, and Antonio Silva. All six of the tested fighters competed on the evening’s televised card, which was aired on Showtime.
Strikeforce went out of their way to have independent testing done for this event, most notably due to the fact that Overeem, who had spent the previous two-plus years fighting overseas, had a cloud of controversy over his head in terms of speculated steroid use, along with the fact that the Missouri State Athletic Commission was not going to be testing every fighter on the card. However, like all his tests before, Overeem turned in a clean sample, no doubt hoping it will silence the doubters.
The official test results from several other fighters from the card, including Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers, have not yet been made available by the MSAC.
