Brotherly Love: Overeem Brothers Say They’ll Fight Each Other

There’s a remote chance Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem and bother Valentijn Overeem could face each other in the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix.

A lot of cards have to fall into place before the potential fight could happen, but the scenario exists for the two brothers to possibly face each other.

If any of the remaining participants have to pull out of a scheduled Grand Prix match up, the older of the two Overeem brothers could enter the tournament as an alternate.

If that happens, and the two end up being aligned to fight, they would do it.

“Tournament-wise, yes. A separate fight, no,” said Alistair about potentially fighting his brother. “In a tournament, you obviously advance, so in a tournament fashion we would fight each other.”

“I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Valentijn. “If I get thrown in the tournament, if, which I hope, and you keep winning your fights and he keeps winning his fights, it’s inevitable.”

“It’s far away still, so I wouldn’t go as far as saying it will happen. It might happen, and if it happens than, you know, we’re going to keep I exciting,” added Valentijn. “We’ll just see what happens.”

The brothers likely have discussed the possibility. Neither had to think about their answer to the question.

“I’m a professional. If I’m in the ring or the cage, I fight,” stated Alistair. “It’s like my brother said, it’s far away, but we’re professionals. If people want to see that fight and paid money for a ticket, we should give them what they want,” added Alistair.

“I mean, we fight everyday in the gym, and he kicked my (expletive) several times, more than several times.”

Valentijn admitted those sessions were, “a long time ago.”

Strikeforce SEC Scott Coker said the two fighting would be a “last resort.”
