Silva vs. Vera In The Works For UFC 125 This January

A light heavyweight match up between Brazilian slugger Thiago Silva and Brandon Vera is in the works for UFC 125 this January.

MMAjunkie.com first reported news of the bout late last evening, stating that at least one of the fighters has agreed to the fight.

Vera is coming off a first round technical knockout loss to Jon Jones at “UFC on Versus 1”, which was easily the most disappointing fight in his entire career. The bout followed a unanimous decision loss to Randy Couture at UFC 105, sending him on a two-fight losing streak and once again calling into question his potential to compete at the top level of the sport.

Meanwhile, Silva successfully climbed his way back to the top of the stacked 205-pound division with a vicious knockout victory over Keith Jardine at UFC 102. The win was a successful rebound from Silva’s first professional loss, which was a knockout loss at the hands of former champion Lyoto Machida. However, Silva was once again disappointed when he dropped a unanimous decision to Rashad Evans at UFC 108 and, due to injury, has been out of action since the fight.

The fight is a solid light heavyweight addition to a card that is still very much in the works. At this point, the card which will serve as the promotion’s annual year-end event has no official fights, though a lightweight championship bout between title-holder Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard is expected to serve as the evening’s main event. The card is set for January 1 of 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
