Former middleweight top contender Patrick Cote has been shown the door by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Cote confirmed the release via his Twitter account earlier today, stating that he “finally got the release word from the UFC.”

The release comes four days after the Canadian striker lost his third consecutive fight. The loss came against Tom Lawlor at last weekend’s UFC 121 where Cote was completely dominated for the entirety of the contest. Prior to that loss, he returned from an injury against Alan Belcher at UFC 113, losing via submission. The two losses followed Cote’s loss to Anderson Silva for the middleweight title back at UFC 90. He lost the fight via technical knockout when a knee injury forced the stoppage.

Prior to the three consecutive defeats, Cote was on a rampage through the 185-pound division after beginning his time with promotion with an 0-4 record. He battled back from the poor start with victories over Scott Smith, Kendall Grove, Drew McFedries, and Ricardo Almeida. The streak earned him the title shot, but, since July of 2008, Cote has gone winless and is now on the market.
