Mark Hominick earns title shot against Jose Aldo.

Mark Hominick made short work of George Roop at “UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2,” winning by technical knockout in the first round and earned his shot at the UFC featherweight title.

UFC president Dana White said leading up to Saturday’s event in Fort Hood, Texas that if Hominick defeated Roop that he’d face Jose Aldo in the co-main event at UFC 129 slated to be held on April 30 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada headlined by Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields.

Hominick’s precision striking was too much for Roop. The Canadian striker found a home for a his right hand that hurt Roop early. After knocking Roop down with a left hook and following with another shot, the fight was stopped. Roop initially complained about the stoppage but struggled to stand on wobbly legs after the referee intervened.

Following the fight, Hominick switched his focus to featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo.

“He’s never faced anyone like me and I’m going to prove it,” said Hominick in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

Aldo vs. Hominick is sure to be a crowd pleaser with both preferring striking as their main weapons, and the Canadian feels he’s a better striker than the Brazilian titleholder.

“I believe my stand-up is far superior to anyone,” said Hominick following the TKO win over Roop.
