UFC 129: Machida Knocks Out Couture

Lyoto Machida

Machida earns the KO stoppage

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida is back on track.

“The Dragon’s” bout with Randy Couture began slow, and the first round of action did not feature much action. Couture pressed the action early, while Machida was content to counter. Landing several nice shots, the Brazilian took home the first round, while the two headed to their corners prior to the second frame.

In the next round, Machida began to loosen up. Couture continued to push forward, but a front-kick to the head of Couture cut the fight short. The UFC Hall of Famer dropped, and Machida moved in for the kill. Before he could land any other significant shots, referee Yves Lavigne pulled him off of his victim.

In the post-fight press conference, Machida expressed his respect for Couture, while the legend confirmed that he would be walking away from the sport. While the ending was not ideal, the career of Couture was certainly one of the greatest of all time.
