Highlights from the most prestigious grappling tournament in the world
Former UFC participants Dean Lister and Vinny Magalhaes won titles in their respective divisions at the prestigious ADCC 2011 event last week.
Magalhaes, a former competitor on The Ultimate Fighter, defeated Fabricio Werdum in a stunning conclusion to the over 99kg tournament. Werdum has escaped from an omoplata and locked in a straight arm bar of his own, but Magalhaes was miraculously able to ride out the remaining time and win the bout on points.
Lister, who last competed at UFC 92 against Yushin Okami, was not expected to mount much of a challenge in the Under 99kg tournament due to his age. But the 2003 Absolute champion persevered and used a succession of leg locks to win gold once again.
Other ADCC highlights:
– Andre Galvao won the 2011 Absolute championship by defeating Pablo Popovitch with a toe hold. Galvao also defeated Sergio Morales, Gunnar Nelson and Rousimar Palhares.
– Kyra Gracie won her third ADCC championship over Michelle Nicollini via rear naked choke.
– Braulio Estima defeated Ronald “Jacare” Souza after previously going 0-4 against him.
