UFC 136 Medical Suspensions

UFC 136 Open Workout at the Expo-27Maynard earns longest suspension following knockout loss

Five fighters received suspensions of longer than five days from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation Monday following UFC 136 Saturday night in Houston.

Leading the way were the combatants from the night’s main event, challenger Gray Maynard and champion Frankie Edgar. Maynard has handed a 60-day suspension after being knocked out in the fourth round of the UFC lightweight title fight, while Edgar received a 45-day suspension. Details about the cause of the suspensions was not made available.

Joining Edgar and Maynard on the list of fighters receiving extended breaks were middleweights Eric Schafer (30 days) and Mike Massenzio (45 days), and featherweight Leonard Garcia (45 days); featherweight title opponents Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian each received 16 day suspensions as well. Schafer was battered by Aaron Simpson, and Garcia lost his rematch with Nam Phan, while Massenzio kicked off the event with an upset win over Steve Cantwell.

Edgar joked at the post-fight press conference that his team of coaches had already told him that he would have to take a two week vacation from the gym, though he said he’d try to make his way back inside after ten days, tops.
