UFC 141: Preliminary Card Live Blog

LAS VEGAS – HeavyMMA.com is live at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem. The pay-per-view features a main event heavyweight contenders fight between former champion Brock Lesnar and former Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem, plus a co-main event lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone.

Manvel Gamburyan vs. Diego Nunes

Round 2: Nice combination for Gamburyan opens up the second round. Right hand lands for him. Big shot. Nunes misses with a flying knee, and Gamburyan looking for a takedown. They are scrambling here. Nunes manages to escape and lands a spinning back kick. Another takedown attempt from Gamburyan, and Nunes finds himself on the ground again. Round 3: A lot of dancing in the opening 30 seconds of the final round. Gamburyan lands a nice right hand, but takes a hard kick. Nunes keeping the distance well. Head kick blocked by Gamburyan. He is looking for a takedown now, but Nunes reverses and lands a nice knee. Gamburyan misses with a left hook. Another takedown attempt from Gamburyan is stuffed. Another leg kick lands for Nunes. Gamburyan misses with a takedown attempt. Spinning back fist from Nunes misses its target, and Gamburyan almost gets a takedown. Break in action for a shot below the belt. Action resumes. Jacob Volkmann vs. Efrain Escudero

Round 1: Kick from Volkmann to start this contest. Both fighters missing with their punches. Takedown attempt from Volkmann, who falls into a guillotine choke. They scramble, and Volkmann ends up in side control. Escudero looks for a leg lock, but Volkmann escapes and is once again in top position. Escudero attempting to utilize butterfly guard, but Volkmann is overpowering him. Two minutes left in the round. Escudero is getting smothered, but is not taking much damage. The crowd boos. Volkmann appears to be looking for a choke here, but Escudero manages to avoid it. Decent ground and pound from Volkmann as the round comes to a close. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Volkmann.

Round 2: Volkmann shoots for a takedown after missing with a front kick. Side control for Volkmann, who is starting this round the way he left off the first. Fans boo again, and referee Herb Dean asks for Volkmann to do more work. He separates them and stands them back up. Another takedown attempt from Volkmann. He takes Escudero’s back and powers him down to the floor. Escudero gives up his back again. One minute left in the round, and Volkmann nearly sinks in a rear naked choke. He lets it go. Round 3: Escudero lands a knee, but gets taken down yet again. Volkmann working towards his opponent’s back. Very little action happening, and Herb Dean stands the fight up. Bad standup. Dong Hyun Kim vs. Sean Pierson

Round 1: Pierson misses with a leg kick, as does Kim. Pierson clinches his opponent against the cage and is looking for a takedown. Kim breaks away. Nice combination from Pierson, who catches a leg and just misses with an overhand right. Pierson with a very solid leg kick. He catches another kick, but once again fails to do anything with it. Kim with a nice right hand, while Pierson keeps coming up short with his punches. Another kick caught, but Pierson misses with his shots. Brief scramble, and Kim looking for a choke. Another scramble. Pierson escapes and moves to the back of his opponent. Ten seconds left in the round, and Kim survives. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Kim.

Round 2: Another one of Kim’s kicks gets caught by Pierson, who fails to capitalize yet again. Pierson missing with the majority of his punches. Very little action so far in this round. Pierson with a brief clinch, but Kim separates. Leg kick from Kim. Pierson misses with a combination and gets tagged by Kim. They clinch again, and Pierson moves to the back again. Kim escapes, and they are back to striking. Kim lands a kick and a nice punch. Pierson with a leg kick. He misses with a takedown. Kim lands a head kick that hurts Pierson badly. Time is running out in the round, and Kim is trying to get the finish. Pierson survives. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Kim.

Round 3: Kim presses Pierson up against the cage, but Pierson turns him around. They separate. Kim with a takedown, but Pierson stands back up. Kim still working on a takedown. He has it. Pierson looking for a submission from the bottom. The fighters are stood up, 90 seconds remain. Kim misses with a hook, and Pierson presses forward, looking to score. Kim continues to land kicks. Anthony Njokuani vs. Danny Castillo

Round 1: Castillo shoots for a takedown, but comes up well short. Njokuani with a nice combination. Takedown attempt from Castillo. He gets the fight down, but Njokuani is quickly back to his feet. Castillo has his opponent’s back and is driving knees into him. Castillo drags the fight back to the ground and is looking to get full mount. Njokuani escapes, but gets slammed to the mat. He is back up, but Castillo is smothering him. Another takedown, and Castillo has Njokuani’s back. Njokuani rolls and is looking for a guillotine. Castillo makes him pay, slamming Njokuani down. Njokuani gets back to the feet at the end of the round. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Castillo.

Round 2: Njokuani striking early in the round. Castillo doesn’t like that and shoots for a takedown. Njokuani throws Castillo off of him, and the two exchange shots on the feet. Castillo with another takedown attempt, and Njokuani makes him regret it with several big knees to the body. Right hand lands for Njokuani, and Castillo drops to the floor for a moment. Castillo grabs a leg and gets a much-needed takedown. One minute to go in the round, and Castillo is working ground and pound. Round 3: The two exchange on the feet to begin the final frame. Castillo looks takedown, but Njokuani throws him aside. Another failed takedown, and Castillo takes a big knee. He finally gets the fight down, and Njokuani looks to wall-walk. He gets back up, but Castillo still working for the takedown. Leg lock attempt from Njokuani allows him to escape back to the feet. Two minutes remain in the round. Njokuani misses with a front kick and gets taken down again. Njokuani is back up, but Castillo has his back, looking to take the fight back down. Ross Pearson vs. Junior Assunção

Round 1: Leg kick lands for Assuncao, who follows it up with a takedown. Assuncao looks to take the back, but Pearson escapes, and they are back to the striking game. Leg kick from Pearson, and a head kick from Assuncao. Takedown attempt stuffed, and Pearson lands a nice knee. Assuncao with another attempt, but Pearson avoids once again. Two minutes remaining in the round. Pearson is stalking Assuncao here, but not landing many good punches. Very nice combination from Assuncao, who takes a leg kick. Neither fighter dominant in the opening frame. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Assuncao.

Round 2: Pearson pressing forward early, but not landing anything significant. Assuncao looking for a takedown. Pearson lands a nice knee and stuffs a takedown. Assuncao on his back, but Pearson allows him to stand back up. They clinch again, and Pearson exits with a head kick. Jab from Pearson nearly drops Assuncao and he is pouring it on now. Assuncao seems to have recovered in the clinch, but Pearson throws him down. He gets reversed and Assuncao lands at the end of the round. Heavy.com scores the frame 10-9 for Assuncao.

Round 3: Quick takedown from Assuncao, who moves to Pearson’s back. The British striker is in trouble here. He escapes, but Assuncao drags him down again. Pearson stands back up, but he is getting wrapped up by Assuncao. Nice takedown by Assuncao, but Pearson is once again back to his feet. Leg kick from Pearson, followed by a vicious knee. Assuncao looking for a takedown again. They separate, and Pearson lands a nice head kick. Assuncao drives forward with a takedown attempt. Pearson avoids and is looking to strike. He is battering Assuncao on the feet, but can’t seem to find the finish. Clinch at the end caps off the final preliminary card fight. Heavy.com scores the round 10-9 for Pearson.
