Miguel Torres Gets His Own Day

The hometown of former-WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres has officially named June 4, 2010 as “Miguel Angel Torres Day.” Torres, who was raised in East Chicago, IN, never abandoned his roots, as he still resides in the city and runs his gym that is located in the region.

“East Chicago is my home, and to be recognized in this capacity means a lot,” stated Torres. “The city is full of hardworking people, and I have done my best to represent East Chicago in a positive way.”

Torres has made waves in the sport of mixed martial arts during his 40-fight career, which includes 37 wins with only three losses. The most dominant bantamweight in the world for some time, Torres gained the 135-pound title in the WEC and was considered by many a top pound-for-pound fighter before consecutive losses derailed his run.

As of late, a handful of WEC fighters have received such a recognition as Torres. Former-WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and top bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez each had a day of their own earlier this year, displaying the growing recognition of WEC fighters.
