Varner vs. Cerrone II Confirmed For WEC 51

A rematch between WEC lightweight contenders and enemies Donald Cerrone and Jamie Varner, the former 155-pound champion of the promotion,  is set for WEC 51 this September.

MMAWeekly.com reported the news after confirming the fight with sources close to the bout.

Cerrone and Varner first developed the hatred for one another following Varner’s technical decision victory over Cerrone at WEC 38, which ended after Varner could not continue following an illegal blow. The war of words began shortly after the controversial fight, but the two went separate ways up until this point.

Varner returned from injuries sustained in his first match up against Cerrone when he faced Benson Henderson in their title unification bout at WEC 46. Varner lost his belt when he was submitted by Henderson and failed to earn a quick rematch with his controversial draw to Kamal Shalorus at WEC 49.

Cerrone, however, has received his fair share of chances to defeat Henderson, but has failed to do so on two occasions. He is coming off a submission loss to the lightweight champion at WEC 48, which was his third loss in five fights after beginning his career without a loss in his first 10 contests. Much like his nemesis, Cerrone is looking to earn another shot at Henderson and the WEC lightweight belt in the near future.
