A Win Is A Win

After the final numbers were tallied, Hall Pass narrowly defeated Gnomeo & Juliet for #1 at the box office this past weekend, $13.5M to 13.4M. Hey, a win is a win. The other big release, Drive Angry (in 3D!) debuted in 9th place, which means it will be debuting on your Blu-Ray player any day now. Despite releasing several movies with built in audiences, this makes the latest in a string of disasters for Summit Entertainment, the distributor of Drive Angry. If they don’t come up with a hit soon they will be in trouble, because the Twilight cash cow that they produce is quickly coming to an end.

Is It Fate?

Being released this week, we have The Adjustment Bureau. Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt as two lovers separated by Fate (in this case, personified as guys in suits), early buzz is mixed. Next we have Take Me Home Tonight, starring an ensemble cast including Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler. This comedy, set in the 80s and based around Grace chasing his high school crush to an epic end-of-summer party, has sat on the shelf for a while, which is never a good sign, but the trailer looks hysterical. Finally, in limited release we have I Saw the Devil. This Korean thriller tells the story of an elite special agent who goes to extremes to catch the serial killer that murdered his fiancee. This film is finally reaching the States after steadily building word of mouth overseas. If you have a chance to catch Devil, do so; if not, Home seems to be your best bet this week.
