Do We Really Need ‘The Naked Gun’ Reboot With Ed Helms?

-opti

Whether you like it or not, Ed Helms has been attached to the reboot of the beloved 80’s and 90’s franchise that gave a chance for Leslie Nielsen to show off the zany comedic stylings that would pigeonhole him in that role for the rest of his career.

Variety broke the news that Paramount will be producing the reboot with–and this is perhaps the only shining light here–Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant (Night at the Museum) writing the screenplay.

The first Naked Gun premiered in 1988 under the title: The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! The film was an extension of the farcical TV show Police Squad. Nielsen played a fool of a detective in Frank Drebin.

The first film spawned two sequels, one of which starred O.J Simpson in a prominent role (pre-murder rap of course).

With this news breaking, it kind of brings a tear to the eye knowing that Nielsen’s iconic Frank Drebin portrayal will be shaded over by Helms portrayal of the character for future generations.
