The Slammin' Salmon

If you’re looking for quirky independent comedies to take home, this week is the week for you. Our DVD/Blu-Ray roundup is chock full of them. Here’s my takes on the week’s new home video releases.

Defendor – A newly resurgent Woody Harrelson anchors this vigilante tale (oddly enough dropping the same week as the very similar Kick-Ass hits theaters) as a mentally addled defender of the proletariat struggling to rid his hometown from Captain Industry, his possibly imaginary arch-nemesis. Caught this in the theater and enjoyed it a lot, certainly worth taking home.

The Slammin’ Salmon – The guys in Broken Lizard are in a pretty unique place in the movie biz – they work as a troupe, sticking together throughout all of their movies, and their formula works – Super Troopers is a raunch comedy classic. Their latest effort, The Slammin’ Salmon, has one of the weirdest premises I’ve heard in a while – a seafood restaurant owned by a retired boxer has to make a ludicrous amount of money to pay off gambling debts to the Japanese yakuza – but the Broken Lizard guys wring every last drop of yocks out of it in this non-stop gagfest.

Pirate Radio – This imported comedy (retitled from The Boat That Rocked) is kind of stodgy but based on an intriguing true story. An illegal radio station anchored in international waters broadcasts rock & roll to the British Isles, back when the BBC was playing nothing of the sort. A pretty amazing ensemble cast of character actors have brought this some pretty good reviews, but you may need to be an old fogey to truly appreciate it.

Oh My God – This documentary may qualify as an “unintentional comedy” – filmmaker Peter Rodger spent years traveling the globe asking people to describe God to him. Unfortunately, some of those people are David Copperfield, Seal and anti-videogame crusader Jack Thompson. Yeah, I don’t know about you but if I was trying to divine the true nature of the divine, I wouldn’t talk to a dude who does illusions. I would, however, talk to the guy who gets to bang Heidi Klum, so maybe he’s onto something there.
