De Niro, Pacino, and Pesci Going Irish For Scorsese?

The Irishman

Every day there are at least a dozen stories released about “Actor X is interested in signing to star in Director Y’s Mega Project that is 10 years from ever happening”, and 90% of the time they amount to nothing. Today Deadline is running a story that I pray to the movie gods gets made before the world ends in 2012.

Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are the newest names to be jumping on board Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Based on Charles Brandt’s book I Heard You Paint Houses, it’s the story of  Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, real-life mod hitman and the man who claims to have killed Jimmy Hoffa. Robert De Niro is developing the picture through his Tribeca Productions company, but you have to think he is eying the role of Sheeran as a return to form, especially if two of his longtime friends sign on to chew scenery with him.

Scorsese does have a few projects in front of this one to get out of the way first, though. There is Hugo Cabret, his 3D family picture that everyone is anticipating. Then there is Silence, which would star Benicio Del Toro, Daniel Day Lewis and Gabriel Garcia Bernal as Jesuit missionaries teaching Christianity in 17th Century Japan. Yes, I know, it sounds boring to me too, but with that cast and Scorsese behind the lens it’s bound to be worth admission.

Let’s face it, the four names I listed above aren’t getting any younger. Let’s hope for the best, and please, no “This isn’t as good as Goodfellas!” talk this time, ‘mkay? You’re not impressing anyone.
