A preposterous but devilishly entertaining “bad seed” horror yarn worth watching for the outrageous death scenes alone, Case 39 stars Renee Zellweger as a social worker who takes in a seemingly innocent ten-year-old girl (Jodelle Ferland) after her seemingly crazy parents try to cook her in the oven. Not the best idea in the world, as the kid is actually a demon that “feeds on feelings,” causing its victims to hallucinate their worst nightmares before taking their own lives. That’s what you get for trying to do the right thing, Renee! Directed by Christian Alvart with the same kind of hyperactive disorientation he brought to the underrated Pandorum, Case 39 will keep you hooked with its increasingly imaginative and macabre set pieces in which characters kill themselves during intense visions of being attacked by dogs and infested with hornets, to name just two unfortunate scenarios — what horrible ways to go! Poor Jodelle Ferland — after Tideland, Silent Hill, one of the Twilight movies and now this, one wonders if Hollywood is ever going to just let her be a “normal” girl.
