Mayer Howthorne is Andrew Mayer Cohen, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, his stage name being made up by his middle name and the name of the street he used to live in (Howthorne Rd). Formerly known as DJ Haircut and coming from a hip hop producing, crate-digging background, he eventually became sick of the woes of clearing samples and decided to produce his own rare groove material, playing all instruments himself and getting busy on the mic for some serious crooner action. For a start, he recorded two songs in a vintage soul vibe which came to the attention of indie hip hop label Stones Throw’s founder Peanut Butter Wolf who first thought he was hearing re-edits of old songs and immediately signed Mayer Howthorne for a single when it turned out he was actually listening to original material.
Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out received a lot of love from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Amy Winehouse producer Mark Ronson, so recording a full-length was inevitable. A Strange Arrangement holds a dozen feelgood songs dealing with break-ups and make-ups, reminiscent of Smokey Robinson and Curtis Mayfield – the perfect soundtrack for your easy Sunday morning. Thus, Mayer Howthorne delivers new soul food for those desperately waiting for a new album from Jamie Lidell or those of us who were deeply and maybe secretly in love with Amy Winehouse. The longplayer is in stores now, check out the video to the latest single “Maybe So Maybe No” after the jump.
