Don’t want to be a hooker? Off with your head!
Four Afghans are in custody for beheading a young newlywood who wouldn’t become a hooker and make money for her new in-laws, a death that’s even shocking people used to violent attacks on women.
The woman, identified as Mahgul, was slaughtered last week. Police said her mother-in-law (who surely deserves a prize for being the worst mother-in-law EVER) started pressuring the 25-year-old bride to hook up with other men shortly after she married her son just four months ago.
Police have arrested Mahgul’s husband, her mother-in-law, her father-in-law and her husband’s cousin. The cousin, 18, confessed the killing in front of reporters and television cameras. The man, identified as Najibullah, was seen outside the woman’s marital house holding a bloody knife. He said his aunt, Mahgul’s mother-in-law, forced him to kill the young woman.
My uncle’s wife told me I should kill this person. I couldn’t kill her. She told me, ‘if you can’t kill her, then help me do it.’ She forced me and I helped her.
He said his aunt held Mahgul down by the legs as he beheaded her. He said she told him she wanted the bride dead “because she doesn’t listen to me.”
Forcing brides into prostitution might be becoming the next big thing among some Afghan families. In another case, a 15-year-old’s husband’s family tortured and beat her because she wouldn’t become a prostitute.
Sahar Gul was rescued from the house, after neighbors heard her crying. Police said her in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and also locked her in a basement bathroom and starved her.
The young girl had only been married for seven months, and is still in the hospital in Kabul. However, her recovery will likely be long, so she may be sent to India — where presumably, mother-in-laws don’t make their new family members turn tricks.
