One Dead in Miami-Dade Building Collapse

A piece of parking garage that has been under renovation at Miami-Dade college collapsed just a few minutes ago and a number of construction workers are believed to be trapped in the rubble. The Associated Press has just confirmed that one worker has died in the incident. With thanks to WTPS.com for the pic.

Local Fire-Resuce Lt. Arnold Piedrahita told TV cameras the the workers could be heard calling for help shortly after the incident.

TV pictures are showing other employees being treated for injuries by paramedics.

No students were believed to be in the area at the time. The college is located in the western part of the county. The TV pictures are showing a big chunk of the building collapsed.

If there’s any good news out of this it’s that this is a parking garage that was under construction,” Doral Police Chief Ricardo Gomez told Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Right now, we’re doing a head count to see how many people are missing, The issue is the structural integrity of the garage has been compromised to the point that it’s unsafe to get into the garage.”

Five of the injured workers were taken to Jackson hospital, with two construction workers still unaccounted for.
