After 27 tons of flaming brown cheese burned for four days, blocking the Brattli tunnel for almost 2 miles in Norway, authorities announced they will close down the tunnel for weeks to clear the cheesy mess.
The incident, which happened in the town of Narvik, took place last Thursday when the driver noticed that his cargo with 27 tons of brown cheese was on fire inside the trailer. Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported that the cheese caused major damage inside the tunnel, though no one was hurt.
The brown goat cheese, a delicacy known as Brunost, has a high concentration of fat and sugar — which may be the reason why the cheese was able to burn with such fury. Police officer Viggo Berg told NRK that the sweet brown cheese was able to burn “almost like petrol if it gets hot enough.”
Kjell Bojoern Vinje, of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, said this is the first time he has seen a cheese fire in Norway. “I didn’t know that brown cheese burns so well,” he added.
The highway officials said that the Brattli Tunnel at Tysfjord was still under maintenance due to the lethal gases created by the burning cheese. Once the cheese stops fuming, highway crews will start cleaning up the tunnel and repairing damage, which could take weeks.
