San Francisco 49ers’ Chris Culliver Apologizes for Anti-Gay Remarks

Chris Culliver, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver received backlash after he made some anti-gay remarks in a radio interview on Tuesday. This is what the football player had to say when Shock jock Artie Lange of The Artie Lange Show asked him if there were any gay guys on his team:

“I don’t do the gay guys man,” Culliver said. “I don’t do that. No, we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do. Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah, can’t be in the locker room man. Nah.”

When asked if gay football players should keep their sexually a secret, he responded, “Yeah, come out 10 years later after that.”

Following criticism for the remarks, the 49ers issued a statement making it clear that Culliver’s remarks are in no way connected to the philosophy of the team:

“The San Francisco 49ers reject the comments that were made [Tuesday], and have addressed the matter with Chris. There is no place for discrimination within our organization at any level. We have and always will proudly support the LGBT community.”

The football player released his own confusing and seemingly forced apology, which might be more stupid than his initial remarks:

“The derogatory comments I made yesterday were a reflection of thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel,” Culliver said in a statement. “It has taken me seeing them in print to realize that they are hurtful and ugly. Those discriminating feelings are truly not in my heart. Further, I apologize to those who I have hurt and offended, and I pledge to learn and grow from this experience.”

Wait, what? If the thoughts in his head aren’t how he feels, then whose thoughts exactly are they?
