Report: Pope Benedict XVI Resigned Because of Vatican Gay Sex Scandal

Vatican Gay Sex Scandal

An article in the Italian daily newspaper, La Repubblica, links a 300-page report that exposes a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom were being blackmailed, to the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

The report, comprised of “two volumes of almost 300 pages – bound in red,” described a number of inter-Vatican cliques “united by sexual orientation” that met at various places around Rome. The Italian newspaper reported that some of the Vatican officials may have even been influenced by blackmail.

The pope, who resigned on December 17, received the report on the very same day.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi did not deny or confirm the accusations.

“Neither the cardinals’ commission nor I will make comments to confirm or deny the things that are said about this matter,” Lombardi said. “Let each one assume his or her own responsibilities. We shall not be following up on the observations that are made about this.”

The report will be delivered to the pope’s successor upon election.

So did the pope abruptly resign because the report was too much for him to handle? Or is it simply a mere coincidence that it happened to arrive on the same day?
