An Edmonton, Alberta man is on trial facing claims he murdered his roommate over a messy kitchen.

William John Tubrett is charged with second-degree murder in the strangling death of Jamie Vickers in December 2011.

According to Tubrett, he had returned home from a bar early in the morning on December 29 to find his share of a roast had been eaten by a third roommate, Paul Raymond Gill.

Angry about his missing food, Tubrett threw a plate and splattered gravy on the wall and then passed out on the basement couch.

When he awoke, Tubrett said that Vickers was beating him, and the two men struggled and fell to the floor.

Tubrett said he had his arm wrapped around Vickers, but couldn’t tell where, according to defence lawyer Naeem Rauf.

Tubrett then told the jury that he called Gill downstairs and the two of them packed their belongings as Vickers lay unconscious on the floor.

Gill, who testified earlier that he saw Tubrett strange Vickers to death, had a totally different story.

He told the jury that the two roommates fought loudly about the dirty kitchen right before Tubrett choked Vickers to death.
