Cynthia Wachenheim jumped to her death from the eighth story of a Harlem apartment building on Wednesday with her baby strapped to her chest—and the baby miraculously survived with just a few scratches, reports the New York Daily News.
Witnesses said they saw the 44-year-old Manhattan lawyer land on her back after jumping out of the window and her 10-month-old son bounce out of her arms on impact.
“I heard a small scream when she was in the air,” said witness Steven Dominguez, 18. “I noticed something falling, but I didn’t want to believe it was a person. When I got closer, I saw the baby crying,”
As of Wednesday night the baby was in stable condition at the Harlem Hospital.
Neighbors told the New York Post that they heard the victim and her husband just hours before she jumped.
“The husband just kept saying, ‘Why didn’t you pick up the phone? Why would you put me under that stress?’ ” said neighbor Christian Johnson. “They just had a baby. He was just starting to walk.”
Police found a 13-page suicide note written by Wachenheim inside the apartment saying that she was a bad mother and that she was concerned with the way her son had been developing. The woman was apparently convinced her child had cerebral palsy, but doctors said that nothing was wrong with him. Wachenheim also suffered from acute depression and anti-psychotic drugs were found in the apartment.
