Mother shot dead, birmingham alabama, mother shot dead while holding son

The family of the mother that was killed Monday afternoon sit outside of the courtyard of the Gate City public housing projects where she was shot.

Sheri Williams, a 24-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed Monday afternoon when a bullet meant for somebody else ripped through her chest while she stood at the door of her apartment in Birmingham, Alabama with her 10-day-old son in her arms, reports AL.com.

According to Birmingham Police Department spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams Jr., a man had been running from another man who was shooting at him after the two had gotten into a fight at a nearby restaurant. Amidst the chaos, Williams took a bullet and fell back onto a couch. Her baby, who was still in her arms, was not hurt. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I can’t say it was a stray bullet because a bullet doesn’t have a name on it,” Kerry Jackson, the woman’s Uncle, said.

Williams is also the mother to a four-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl. The girl was at school when the incident occurred, but the boy and her mother were upstairs.

Police have yet to make any arrests, but they are looking for a “black man in a white tank top and a black woman in a yellow shirt who is missing some braids.” They were last seen in a black Chrysler Sebring.
