Hero Teacher Killed in Nevada School Shooting, 2 Others Wounded: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

A gunman opened fire this morning at Sparks Middle School in Sparks, Nevada, reports Fox5. The horror unfolded just after 7 a.m., as classes were beginning. One person was killed and two students were wounded before the shooter took his own life.

Here’s what we know so far:


1. 2 People Are Dead

Local police Chief Mieras told reporters that two people were killed, including the gunman. The chief did not say if the other victim was a student or faculty. A dozen students and faculty are being detained for questioning. Reporters were told at the first press conference on the shooting that 150-200 law-enforcement personell were active in securing the school.

2. 2 Students Are in Critical Condition

Angela Rambo, a spokesperson for a local hospital told reporters that two students, both male, one a 12-year-old boy, are in critical condition. The shooting happened just as classes were beginning on the morning of October 21, reports KTVN.

3. The Shooter May Be a Student

CBS Las Vegas student Faith Evans telling them that one of her seventh grade classmates shot a teacher. Evans told the station she thinks that she heard five shots and that the shooting took place at the back of the school.

Fox Reno reports that the shooter had been talking about how “his life was ruined” prior to opening fire.

Police reported that the gunman had been “neutralized” by the time news of the attack had broken. The Reno-Gazzette initially reported that the suspect is in custody. RT.com reports that the gunman was killed by a self-inflicted wound. Reno deputy chief Tom Robinson told reporters:

I can tell them to rest assured. The schools are safe. The rest of the city is safe.

4. The City of Sparks is Close to Reno

Sparks is just east of Reno in northern Nevada. According to Sparks’ website, the school has 630 students enrolled. The school are known as the Golden Bears.

The scene is no longer considered active. Parents are advised to pick up their children at Sparks High School, reports My News 4.


5. This is the Second Shooting in Nevada This Morning

The 911 call for the shooting came in at around 7:15 a.m., less than two hours after three people were shot at a Las Vegas casino.
