One student is reported to have been shot in a shooting that erupted, possibly after an argument over a girl, at West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Florida, reports Click Orlando. The shooting occurred at 1:15 p.m. Orange County Fire Rescue responded to the scene at 1:25 p.m., according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The victim is a 15-year-old male student and the suspect is 17-year-old.

1. The Shooting May Be Over a Girl

Only one student is reported to have been shot in his torso. The student is a male and is in stable condition. The victim has been taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, reports Fox Orlando.

The Orlando Sentinel reports a student say he saw the victim lying, twitching on the ground.

2. The Suspect Has Just Been ‘Detained’

The shooter fled through the school. After initial reports indicated the suspect was female, WESH reports that police are looking for a black male in a pink shirt and white shorts, they believe he may have switched shirts and is now wearing a white tank top. Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings have confirmed that the shooter is at large. A dog unit was brought in to help search for the perp.

One student described the scene amid the police search as “chaotic.” The Sentinel goes on to report that the suspect is a student who was suspended from school at the time of the attack. Before opening fire, he punched the victim twice in the face according to reports.


3. School Was Being Dismissed When the Shooting Happened

The school was being dismissed at 1:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred. Therefore no lockdown has been ordered. Regardless, the school’s principal Douglas Szcinski left this phone message for parents:

Good afternoon parents, this is Douglas Szcinski, principal of West Orange High School. Our school is currently on a lockdown. We are following all safety procedures and precautions. There has been an incident in which one student was shot. That student is alert and being transported to the hospital. Law enforcement is on scene working the situation. We will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you.

One parent, Alicia Hutta, was not impressed with the school’s plans for emergencies such as this, telling My News 13, she said:

We need better plans, in case something like this happens where the kids can meet parents, some kind of structure.



4. The Gunfire Erupted Close at the School Bus Loop

The gunfire erupted close to a school bus, on a soccer practice field, on the campus after an argument, reports WESH.


5. In 2009, a Teacher at the School Threatened to Kill Students

In October 2009, science teacher Jerrold Leigh Gabriel was arrested after making a threat against students and a fellow teacher. The threat was later revealed to have been in a harmless context, but Gabriel was arrested the following day when he made more serious threats against his wife and son, reports The Orlando Sentinel.

The school has around 3800 students enrolled at grades 9-12. It was founded in 1975.
