Columbia Mall Shooting: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

An active shooting situation has been called in at the Columbia Mall in Columbia, Maryland in Howard County. Police were called at around 11:15 a.m. When they arrived they found three dead, including one found near a shotgun and ammunition who has been confirmed as the shooter.

The shooting is confirmed to have taken place in the mall’s skate shop Zumiez on the malls second floor.

Here is what you need to know about this situation:


1. Two Mall Employees and the Shooter Are Dead

The police report that 3 people are dead, including the shooter. Two are mall employees of the store Zumiez where the shooting occurred. They have been identified as 21-year-old Brianna Benlolo and 25-year-old Tyler Johnson.

The police are also confirming that one of the body of the man believed to be the shooter, 19-year-old Darion Marcus Aguilar was found near a shotgun and ammunition. It now seems apparent that the suspected gunman died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.


2. Explosives Were Found in the Suspects Bag

Police found crudely fashioned explosives in the bag of the suspected gunman. The devices, which were neutralized by police were fashioned from fireworks.


3. Before Noon an Active Shooter Situation Was Reported

Police received a call at around 11:15 a.m. reporting an active shooting situation at the mall.


4. Police and the Fire Department Arrived on the Scene After 2 Minutes

The authorities and the community are praising first responders for their timeliness in reacting to the active shooting situation. Police report that first responders were there within two minutes of the first 911 call. Police set up staging areas outside of Sears.


5. The Mall Was on Lockdown and Closed

One brief statement issued by the mall at around noon said, “Mall is closed. Believe that the situation may be over, but the mall is closed.”

For multiple hours the mall was locked down as police went from store to store clearing customers from the stores where they sought refuge during the shooting.
