At 2:30 a.m. on December 1, 2013, a sidewalk brawl between an off-duty cop and a firefighter celebrating his wedding night turned into a deadly shooting.
Anthony Bruno, a Kansas City fireman, was taking a cab from his own wedding to the hotel where the cop, Donald Hubbard, was moonlighting as a security guard. When a violent altercation allegedly broke out between Bruno and the cab driver, Hubbard attempted to arrest him.
In cell phone footage of the altercation that was released this week, an intoxicated Bruno gets the upper hand on Hubbard and repeatedly punches him in the face. It was at this point, at around 2:30 a.m., that Hubbard pulled his service revolver and fatally shot Bruno, twice in the chest.
Hubbard reportedly suffered a skull fracture and broken face bones after the assault; he required facial reconstructive surgery. KCTV reports that on February 14, a grand jury cleared Hubbard of any charges associated with the shooting.
