Elkan Abramowitz: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Elkan Abramowitz is Woody Allen’s defense attorney who is hitting the headlines after his appearance on the Today show. Abramowitz took to TV screens to tell viewers that he believed Dylan Farrow’s sexual assault allegations had been manufactured by her mother, Allen’s former girlfriend, Mia Farrow. Speaking for Woody, he said:

His reaction is one of overwhelming sadness because of what has happened to Dylan. She was a pawn in a huge fight between him and Mia Farrow years ago, and the idea that she was molested was implanted in her by her mother.

That memory is never going to go away. So the fact that she says this now, that it happened 20 years ago, is totally understandable.

In my view, she’s not lying. I think she truly believes this happened. That’s what the vice of this is. When you implant a story in a fragile 7-year-old’s mind, it stays there forever. It never goes away.

He represented Woody Allen in the original messy custody battle that ensued between Allen and Mia Farrow in 1993. When Farrow discovered that Allen had been having an affair with Farrow’s adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, the couple went to court to battle over their many children. In this case, Allen was represented by Abramowitz.

2. Abramowitz is a ‘White Collar Criminal Defense Lawyer’

He’s a veteran of the New York legal scene describing himself as a “white collar criminal defense lawyer” on his website. On his site he adds:

3. Abramowitz Once Acted in a Movie Called ‘Compromising Positions’

He’s married to screenwriter and novelist Susan Issacs. Not only that, but he happeared in two of her movies, Hello Again (1987) with Shelly Long, and Compromising Positions (1985) with Susan Sarandon. Susan Issacs is also highly decorated in her field having served as the president of the Mystery Writers of American and sitting on the boards of Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, the Queens College Foundation, the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Association, and the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.


4. Abramowitz is Married With Kids

He has two children with Issacs, Andrew (born 1970) and Elizabeth. The couple were married on August 11, 1968 and live on Long Island. Both Abramowitz and Issacs were born in Brooklyn.


5. He Once Investigated Former NYC Mayor David Dinkins

He highly decorated in the legal field, according to his own site, in 2008, he was awarded the “New York Council of Defense Lawyers’ Norman S. Ostrow award for the defense of liberty and the preservation of individual rights.” In 1990, he was chosen to investigate the then-mayor of New York City, David Dinkins, over a stock transfer Dinkins made to his son. For this, he was appointed Special Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Investigation for the City of New York. In addition to all of this, he has also severed as Assistant Deputy Mayor for the City of New York.
