Sir Elton John and long-time partner David Furnish entered into a civil partnership in 2005, but have finally planned a wedding. Read on for the details on the event, their relationship, and some background on Furnish.
1. The Wedding Came After a Change in the Law for Same-Sex Marriages.
The Guardian has reported that Elton John and David Furnish have planned a low-key event for their official wedding, scheduled for December 2014.
The couple, who underwent a civil partnership in 2005 on the day the ceremonies were introduced, said family and friends had been eager to hear about their plans. In an interview for US television, John said: “We’ll do it very quietly. But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion and we will have our children.”
When the two celebrated their civil partnership in 2005, Daily Mail reports:
The showbiz couple “married” in an emotional civil partnership ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall after 12 years together. Only a handful of guests witnessed the private ceremony – held in the same venue where the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles married in April. Among them were close friends artist Sam Taylor-Wood and her husband, art dealer Jay Jopling.
Furnish’s family was in attendance and said that it was a joyous and emotional event:
Sir Elton’s mother Sheila and stepfather Fred, and Mr Furnish’s parents Gladys and Jack, who flew in from their native Canada, were also there. Jack Furnish described it as “one of the happiest days of my life” and a beaming Gladys said: “I’m very proud.”
2. Their First Ceremony Was Not the Colorful Affair You Would Have Imagined
According to Daily Mail, when John and Furnish celebrated their original civil union, Sir Elton John ditched his normal attire of bright colors and wore a black suit with his new husband. However, John did have a diamond brooch on his lapel.
After the ceremony, John and Furnish posed for photographers and John blew kisses to fans who had crowded around outside. John and Furnish then left in a black Rolls-Royce.
Prior to the couple’s departure, they were greeted with a decadent cake from Ben & Jerry’s:
Two employees of ice-cream firm Ben & Jerry’s were thrust into the limelight when Mr Furnish spotted the “wedding cake” they had specially prepared for the occasion. The “vanilla and appley ever after cake” was topped by two tin soldier figures supporting guardsman-style helmets.
Such a simple affair makes you wonder what their 2014 wedding will be like …
3. Furnish and John Have Two Sons Together
On Christmas Day in 2010, Furnish and John became parents to Zachary who was born via a surrogate, according to Hello Magazine. Then, in January of 2013, the couple welcomed their son Elijah Joseph Daniel Furnish-John into the world. Zachary calls John “Daddy” and Furnish “Papa,” but John fears for the future with his children. He told Radio Times:
Being the child of someone famous is a huge ball and chain around your ankles. It’s going to be very difficult … At school other children will say, ‘You don’t have a mummy’ … We’ve come a long way, but there’s still homophobia and will be until a new generation of parents don’t instill it in their children.

After the birth of their second child, Furnish opened up to Hello Magazine saying:
Throughout our lives we have both loved and been loved, but the love of a parent for his or her child is different to anything else, as all parents will know. You find new depths of love, and experience pure joy.
As for the surrogate who has carried both of the couple’s sons, John stated:
We have a very close bond with her and were in constant touch throughout the pregnancy, getting updates, seeing scans and sharing all the little details that make those nine months so exciting. She has given us two amazing gifts and we in turn have a duty of care to her and are fiercely protective of her anonymity.
In addition to having their own sons, both Furnish and John are the godfathers of Brooklyn Beckham, David and Victoria Beckham’s son.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation is one of the biggest AIDS charities in the world. Their mission is:
We fund frontline programmes that help to alleviate the pain – whether physical, emotional or financial – of those living with, affected by or at risk of HIV/AIDS, and to continue the fight against this worldwide pandemic so that no one is left behind.
In the above Twitter photo, David Furnish shows his support for the cause and for his partner by participating in one of the organization’s efforts to spread awareness. The foundation asked celebrities to prick their fingers as a symbol and Furnish participated right away.

5. Furnish Is a Filmmaker Who’s Worked With John on Several Projects
They say you shouldn’t mix business with pleasure, but it seems to work well for David Furnish and Sir Elton John. Furnish is a film-maker who has produced projects including Elton John: Tantrums & Tiaras, Gnomeo & Juliet, and It’s a Boy Girl Thing. When talking about working with his partner John on the movie Gnomeo & Juliet, IMDb quotes Furnish as saying:
When Elton (John) and I work on things, we want to invest our time, creativity and energy in things that hopefully bring the world closer together, not further apart. The movie’s message essentially says it doesn’t matter if you’re a red or a blue. At the end of the day parents should love their children and want what’s best for them. Elton and I try not be judgmental people. We are not advocates in the placard-carrying way. We just try to live our life by example.
