A new movement, calling itself Operation American Spring, based on the Arab Spring that saw the overthrow of oppressive regimes across the Middle East and North Africa, aims to overthrow President Barack Obama.
The group, led by a vocal group of military veterans, is hoping to rally millions of “patriots” to the cause of overthrowing the “tyrannical” “communist” regime.
Here is what you need to know:
1. They’re Calling for a Giant Peaceful Protest in Washington, D.C.
The first declaration of Operation American Spring called for a massive protest on May 16, 2014. The declaration, sent out by retired U.S. Army Colonel Harry Riley, requested 10 million people show up to Washington, D.C., for a nonviolent protest.
Above you can watch a news reports from The Young Turks about that event.
2. They Want to Oust Obama & the Leadership of Both Parties
Riley envisions the American Spring happening in three stages: protests, ousting the current leaders, and a tribunal to install new leadership. After occupying Washington, the most crucial stage, according to American Spring supporters, is to impeach Obama. The movement also aims to remove Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, and Attorney General Eric Holder, from office.
3. They Want to Install Right Wing Politicians Like Cruz & Governor Walker
Phase three of the movement dictates that right-wing politicians like Allen West, Ted Cruz, Ron Paul and Wisconsin’s Governor Scott Walker be put in “positions of power.”
Colonel Riley Writes:
Those with the principles of a West, Cruz, Dr. Ben Carson, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan, should comprise a tribunal and assume positions of authority to convene investigations, recommend appropriate charges against politicians and government employees to the new U.S. Attorney General appointed by the new President.
He claims that phases 2 and 3 completely cohere to the Constitution.
4. Riley Used to Work for the NSA
Colonel Harry Riley is responsible for the call to start the movement, as well as OperationAmericanSpring.org website. In recent years, Riley has become a prolific poster on the forum website Patriots for America, where he goes on tirades against socialism and points out that federal officers sent to Cliven Bundy’s ranch were Chinese and Hispanic.
Riley used to work at the National Security Agency.
5. Their ‘Rules of Engagement’ Include Bringing Bibles
Another former military organizer of the event, Senior Chief Geoff Ross, posted the official “Rules of Engagement” for the march on May 16. The first rule is that protesters may not bring guns. He writes:
The Communist forces that control Washington DC do not recognize the 2nd Amendment and have banned all weapons and ammunition from the district. Do not give them the opportunity to arrest you and prosecute you.
He suggests instead that protesters bring copies of the Bible and the Constitution. Although the protest is billed as nonviolent, Ross does say that protesters will have the right to “self-defense.” He also advocates militia involvement and hopes at least 400,000 attend the rally.
