Anita Lovren is married to Croatian center back Dejan Lovren, who plays for England’s Southampton Premier League team in the regular season. She made WAG waves at the World Cup for a controversial Instagram post, though she’s not in Brazil for the festivities.
Here’s what you need to know about the bold beauty behind the Croatian defender.
1. She’s Been Married to Dejan Since 2013
Dejan even took a night off from footballing to get ready for his wedding last June. The happy couple married in Zagreb (the capital of Croatia) in a traditionally elaborate ceremony with a reception at the Westin hotel. It technically wasn’t the couple’s real wedding — they first made it official, secretly, at the Zagreb registry office a year before and had been dating for six years before that.
2. She Called Out a World Cup Referee on Social Media
On June 12, Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura made a controversial call in a Brazil–Croatia game that would help contribute to Brazil’s 3-1 victory. The penalty call was made directly against Dejan Lovren — and hell hath no anger like a scorned WAG. Anita took to Instagram and posted a photo of Nishimura in a Brazilian jersey, causing a social media frenzy.
3. But She’s Rooting From Afar
Through social media the world learned that Anita is cheering on Dejan from her home country’s capital of Zagreb. That’s not to say that she’s not cheering him on with everything she’s got, though — both she and her daughter have been spotted sporting custom Croatia jerseys.
4. The Couple Have One Daughter
Despite recent rumors that Anita was pregnant (a fact Dejan disputed on social media), they have only one daughter, Elena. Elena was born before the couple were officially married, which is likely why they had a preliminary ceremony at the registry before their formal wedding. The baby was born in France when Dejan was playing for Lyon — and, as is typical for the social-media-loving pair — they announced the baby’s birth online. “I became a father,” Dejan wrote. “This is something great.”
5. Anita Has Adjusted Well to England
Moving with a young child can be a difficult task for any parent, but it can be especially annoying for those in the limelight. Being as young as she is, it seems that Anita has mastered her social presence by being able to successfully project an image that she controls. This has held true after the couple’s big move from France to England — a feat made easier by her fluency in English. The couple have been quoted as saying that they hope Elena “will enjoy a pleasant upbringing in [England].”
