Abdul Haw Wasiq is an Afghan national born in 1971. According to a Department of Defense profile of Wasiq released by Wikileaks, he served as the Taliban Deputy Minister of Intelligence. He was reportedly "central to the Taliban's efforts to form alliances with other Islamic fundamentalist groups," forming the coalitions that would oppose U.S. troops in Afghanistan. In January 2008, shortly after he was approved for continued incarceration, he was listed as being of "high risk to pose a threat to the US, its interests and allies." He was captured in Afghanistan on November 24, 2001, and transferred to Guantanamo on January 11, 2002. At the time he was deemed an important asset for intelligence purposes.
