Minutes before Uruguay’s big victory over Italy in the final game of Group D’s World Cup group round, Uruguay’s star player clashed with Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. The altercation ended with Chiellini lowering his shirt to accused Suarez of biting him.

Here’s what you need to know:


1. He’s Accused of Biting Chiellini’s Left Shoulder

During a clash with the Italian defender at around 80 minutes into the game, Chiellini lashed out after Suarez appears to lean his head in and bite his shoulder. The two wind up on the ground, Chiellini clutching his shoulder, and Suarez clutching his teeth,

3. He’s Bitten Players Before

On April 21, 2013, playing for Liverpool, Suarez chomped on the arm of Branislav Ivanovic in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.


4. He Could Be Banned for Up to Two Years

People took to social media after the game to say that Uruguay’s star player should, or will, be banned for the bite heard around the world. The Associated Press reports that a penalty for a bite could be a ban for up to 2 years.
