Former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco will make his head coaching debut Friday night when he leads UConn in its season opener against BYU.

The Huskies lost their first nine games of the season last year and fired coach Paul Pasqualoni after the first four. But with Casey Cochran under center, UConn managed to win their last three games, including a 45-10 rout of Memphis in their season finale.

BYU is coming off a much more successful season. The Cougars won 7 of 9 after a 1-2 start to earn a bid in the Fight Hunger Bowl, which they lost 31-16 to Washington.
