Secretary of State John Kerry spoke out Wednesday on the slaying of American journalist James Foley, issuing a statement through his office and tweeting that the terrorist group ISIS, also known as ISIL, “must be destroyed” and “will be crushed.”

Here’s the first part of the statement. You can read the rest of it here.

James Foley went to the darkest of places to shine the light of truth. Nothing could stop him from sharing with the world the reality of what was happening on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan, or the struggle against a brutal dictator in Libya, and he was just as determined to do the same from Syria. He was brave and bold, and no masked coward can ever steal the legacy of this courageous American who lived out the meaning of the word journalism.

As the United States continued air strikes and was reported to be considering sending additional troops to Iraq, Kerry sent this tweet, which was re-tweeted more than 1,000 times in the first two hours.

Kerry’s comments followed a five-minute televised statement from President Obama, who vied to continue to take the fight to the so-called Islamic State despite the terror group’s claim that it would execute a second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, if air strikes continued.
