“The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter,” Joe Biden said in a statement issued on behalf of his family. “More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother. His absolute honor made him a role model for our family. Beau embodied my father’s saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did. In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.”

4. She Supported Beau in His Political Career

Hallie Biden was often seen alongside her husband during his many political and public appearances before his health declined, including his successful 2006 and 2010 campaigns for Delaware attorney general. In an interview with Delaware Today in 2003, she talked about the first time she saw him speak in public, at a benefit for a hospital:

‘It was startling how personable he was,’ Hallie says. ‘The real him came across.’ She looked around at the audience and saw how intently everyone was listening. ‘As a girlfriend, I was so proud and impressed.’

Hallie says Beau’s energy is contagious. He’ll drop whatever he’s doing to help out a friend or family member. He runs out the door just as he’s about to sit down to dinner if his grandmother calls and needs him. If one of Hunter’s three daughters forgets her lunch, Beau happily drops it off at school.

Hallie, Beau and their children rescued a nine-month-old lab mix in November 2014 while celebrating Thanksgiving in Nantucket, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The dog, named Indi, was abandoned in Mississippi and sent to the Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals, because dogs are tough to place in Mississippi, according to the Hattiesburg Journal.

“Susan Richards, one of our board members, took Peggy (the dog’s former name) into town Friday afternoon,” Pamela Murphy, president of the Massachusetts shelter, told the newspaper. “Peggy was wearing an ‘adopt me’ scarf, and she was stopped by a family on the street.”

The shelter didn’t realize who the family was.

“They filled out an application just like everyone else, and their references even checked out,” Murphy said, with a laugh.
