One of the Marines killed in the Chattanooga shootings of July 16 has been named by his family as Staff Sergeant David Wyatt. Authorities say Mohammad Youssef Abuldazeez opened fire at two military locations in Tennessee, killing four Marines and wounding three others. The other fallen Marines from the attack have been named as Lance Corporal Skip Wells, Sgt Carson Holmquist and SSgt David Wyatt. He was 37 years old.

1. His Wife Said There Would Be ‘No Sleep Tonight,’ Upon Learning of His Death

He’s survived by his wife, Lorri, and the couple’s two children. They’ve been married since December 2004. A family member wrote on Lorri Wyatt’s Facebook page saying “There will be no sleep tonight.” To which Lorri replied “None.”


2. He Went to the University of Montana

According to his Facebook page, Wyatt is a native of Russellville, Arkansas. He adds on his page that he studied at the University of Montana for a time.


3. There Were So Many Mourners at His Home on the Night of His Killing, Neighbors Thought the Wyatt’s Were Having a Party

Speaking to the Tennessean, one of Wyatt’s neighbors said “There were seven or eight cars there last night. I thought they were having a party. It didn’t go through my mind.” The newspaper adds that a Hamilton County deputy stood watch over the house after the tragedy. An American flag hangs proudly from the Wyatt home. Another neighbor began sobbing when she was told about Wyatt’s killing, saying he was a nice man.

Mass Live reports that the Sullivan family were dismayed at the “sterile” document given to the family that announced Thomas Sullivan’s death. Wyatt and Sullivan were friends on Facebook. He went to high school with St. Louis Rams official Casey Pearce who tweeted “Heartbroken to learn one of the Marines killed in Chatt. yesterday was a hs classmate of mine. Thank you David Wyatt for your service.”


5. His Killer Grew Up in a Middle Class Muslim Family

NBC News reports that Abdulazeez is a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Kuwait. He came to the United States in 1996 with his parents.

He lived in Hixson, Tennessee, which is a community in Chattanooga, in a middle-class Muslim family.

The FBI was searching the neighborhood where his family lives:
