What Were the Top Google Search Trends of 2015 Worldwide?

Google has unveiled the top trending searches in the world during 2015, with former NBA player Lamar Odom topping the list.

Odom, the husband of Khloe Kardashian, nearly died after overdosing during a binge at a Nevada brothel.

The second highest search trend was Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical newspaper that was attacked by terrorists in January. Paris, the city which was targeted for both that attack and again in November, was the fifth highest search. You can see the full list below.

Google also released the top trends in several categories, including people, which was also topped by Lamar Odom, followed by Ronda Rousey and Caitlyn Jenner.

The biggest movie trend in 2015 was Jurassic World. Adele was the most searched musician, followed by Sia. Tragically, Eagles of Death Metal, the band playing at the Bataclan theater in Paris during the terror attacks, was third in the list musician in 2015.

The death of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was the top trend in the “loss” category, followed by Brazilian singer Cristiano Araujo, actor Christopher Lee and Sandra Bland, a black woman who died in a Texas jail cell after a controversial traffic stop.

The iPhone 6S, the Samsung Galaxy S6 topped the list in consumer tech. Big Brother Brazil and Jessica Jones were topped the list of trending TV shows.

1. Lamar Odom

Odom, 36, tragically captured the world’s attention when he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel following an overdose. Odom was hospitalized and appeared to be on his death bed, but survived.

It’s reported that Odom, a New York native who won two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, suffered memory loss and can barely walk.

Odom is still married to Khloe Kardashian and had been featured on the Kardashian family’s reality show.

The offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo were attacked by Islamic terrorists on January 7, 2015.

Two brothers, Said and Cherif Kouachi, armed with assault rifles killed 11 people and wounded 11 others inside the offices, before killing a French National Police officer outside. The brothers were later killed by police following a massive manhunt. The newspaper was targeted because of its cartoonish depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

Two million people rallied in Paris in the days after the attacks in a display of solidarity. The phrase Je suis Charlie, or I am Charlie, trended worldwide. The newspaper continued publishing and sold nearly 8 million copies of its first issue after the attack.

3. Agar.io

Agar.io emerged as one of the top online multiplayer games of 2015. The game was developed by Matheus Valadares, a 19-year-old Brazilian, in April. A mobile version of the game was released in July. It has become hugely popular on social media and is often broadcasted on Twitch.tv and YouTube.

Players control a cell in a map that represents a petri dish with an aim of growing as large as possible by swallowing smaller cells without being swallowed by bigger ones.

The game’s name comes from agar, which is a substance used to culture bacteria.

4. Jurassic World

Jurassic World, starring Chris Pratt, is the most-searched movie of 2015. The latest in the Jurassic Park series was released on June 12.

The movie was also tops at the box office in 2015, grossing $1.6 billion worldwide.

5. Paris

Paris was one of the most searched topics in 2015 as a result of the Charlie Hebdo attack and a second terror attack in November.

In the second attack, on November 13, teams of ISIS terrorists set off suicide bombs outside the national soccer stadium, opened fire outside of bars and restaurants and stormed the Bataclan theater, where an American band was playing in front of a sold out crowd.

The terrorists killed 130 people, including 87 inside the theater.

6. Furious 7

Furious 7 , the latest in the Fast and the Furious series, was released on April 3. It is the final movie in the series to star Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash.

The film finished behind Jurassic World at the box office, with $1.5 billion grossed worldwide.

7. Fallout 4

Fallout 4, an open-world, role-playing action game, was released in November. It was one of the most critically acclaimed video games of the year.

Many of the searches came in the lead-up to the release, as gamers searched for trailers and any info about the game they could find.

8. Ronda Rousey

UFC fighter Ronda Rousey dominated most of 2015, both in the octagon and in the entertainment world. She needed just 48 seconds to defeat two opponents in her first two fights of the year.

But Rousey’s year ended on a sour note in November, when she was knocked out by Holly Holm, losing her Bantamweight Championship. She is expected to return to fighting at some point in 2016 for a highly anticipated rematch against Holm.

9. Caitlyn Jenner

Caitlyn Jenner came out publicly as transgender in 2015 in a Vanity Fair cover story. The Olympic hero who became a reality star through her marriage to Kris Jenner, debuted her own show about her transition.

She also received several honors during 2015, including the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2015 ESPYs and Glamour’s Woman of the Year award.

10. American Sniper

American Sniper, was released at the end of December 2014. The movie, direct by Clint Eastwood, stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, a U.S. Navy Seals’ sniper and is based on Kyle’s own book, American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.

Kyle was murdered in February 2013 by a fellow veteran, Eddie Ray Routh, who Kyle was trying to help deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.
