LISTEN: N-Word Heard on Chicago Police Radio

A recording of Chicago Police radio transmissions posted online Monday reveals that a racial slur was used on the air Sunday morning on two occasions.

The audio was posted by Twitter user @SPOTNEWSonIG, who live tweets Chicago police scanner traffic. You can listen to the recording above or by clicking here.

At about the 50-second mark of the clip, a man can be heard saying, “typical f*cking n*ggers.” The comment came after friendly banter between an officer and a dispatcher.

An officer can be heard saying, “find out what radio that, uh, comment came from.”

Then, at the end of the clip, another male voice says, “black lives matter my ass. F*cking n*ggers.”

Police have not confirmed it was an officer who used the slur, but some believe it was an officer.

“The statements made are absolutely unacceptable and Superintendent [John] Escalante has ordered an immediate internal affairs investigation into this incident,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told DNAInfo. “Should the investigation reveal that a member of the Police Department made the statements, he will be immediately suspended and disciplinary proceedings will be launched.”

@SpotNewsonIG said the recording was from Zone 9 at 8:26 a.m.

Activist Will Calloway told The Daily Beast he will hold a press conference Monday afternoon demanding the officer or officers be fired.

“We’re demanding the identities of the officers that made the comments,” he said. “We want to know their districts, and we are demanding that the mayor immediately fire the officers who made the comments. Not launch an investigation, not put them on desk duty with pay… We want these officers off the streets immediately.”
