In a new video purportedly released by the Islamic State, ISIS militants in “Wilayat Ninawa” or “Nineveh,” Iraq, select civilian volunteers to participate in a public execution of five “apostates.” The video was released on May 11 on ISIS terrorist channels. According to the Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium, “Wilayat Ninawa is one of the most important of the Islamic State’s Iraqi provinces. Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, which has been under Islamic State control since June 2014, is in situated in this province.”
In the video, the five Iraqi soldiers are interviewed while wearing orange, “Guantanamo Bay” boilersuits. After, ISIS interviews Iraqi citizens with video inlay of destruction from Iraqi Army airstrikes that includes footage of injured children.
Later, the five condemned soldiers are brought to the center of a town square where five citizens volunteer to execute them. As ISIS militants stand guard, five young men take their handguns and shoot the five Iraqi soldiers in the head.
